Types of Roof Flashing

Copper flashing is one of the most durable of roof flashing materials. Copper is one of the best metal materials to use for exterior flashing because it is durable and malleable. Depending on the slope of the roof, each step will jump up one or two mortar joints and should lap over the previous piece of flashing at least 4 in. An apron flashing is the first piece of flashing installed along the bottom side of the chimney. All step flashing is installed where the roof meets the wall so the instructions below assume that you are installing step flashing somewhere along the roof to wall connection. Most roof leaks can occur where water is channelled off the roof or where the roof abuts a vertical wall or chimney. The vertical end of the flashing is mostly just tucked under the capped or siding secondary counter flashing, caulked along the skylight or mortared right into a chimney.
